Venice will begin on April 25, 2024 charging day trippers for entry, a world first aimed at easing pressure on the Italian city drowning under the weight of mass tourism. Venice became the first city in the world to charge a payment for tourists in a bid to alleviate the pressures of mass tourism and make the city more livable for its residents. The pilot program will exact a fee of 5 euros ($5.4) from day-trippers to Venice, one of Italy's most picturesque and historic cities. Municipal workers were seen checking the tickets of day-trippers outside the front of the fragile lagoon city's Santa Lucia railway station. According to a report in Chinese state media, construction on the upcoming Nanjing North Railway Station will begin in the first half of this year. The report cites officials as saying the design was inspired by the Yangtze River, which flows through the city, and by blooming flowers. CSX — The rail transport and real estate stock ticked up about 1% after CSX beat Wall Street estimates on the top and bottom line in the first quarter. The railway company posted earnings of 46 cents per share on revenue of $3.68 billion, while analysts polled by LSEG anticipated earnings of 45 cents a share and revenue of $3.67 billion. Alcoa reported $2.6 billion in revenue, while analysts polled by LSEG called for $2.56 billion. The company posted a wider-than-anticipated loss of 81 cents per share, versus analysts' estimates for a 55-cent per share loss. CNN —The French street artist JR has unveiled perhaps his most complex Italian trompe l’oeil illusion piece yet, turning a square outside Milan’s Stazione Centrale railway station into a temporary exhibition site of epic proportions. Entitled La Nascita (The Birth), the piece evokes a rugged Alpine terrain with layered black-and-white images. However, while the Florence and Rome projects consisted of flat images mounted onto the fronts of the buildings, in Milan JR has tried to create a sense of depth. “While the exhibition is temporary, even when it’s gone visitors will never see (the station) in the same way,” JR said.
